!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Air Europa flight UX41 from Madrid, Spain to Buenos Aires-Ezeiza, Argentina sustained damage after flying through a hailstorm. The airplane was descending through FL250 towards Buenos Aires when the incident happened. A safe landing was made on Ezeiza's runway 11 at 07:58. The Airbus A330 had sustained damage to co-pilots windscreen and the nose cone was punctured.

I wonder if this was just one of those freaky things (downwind of a taaaaalllll thundercloud) that happens, or if ATC really were asleep at the wheel and failed to direct them away from bad weather.

I have a feeling the crew made a bad choice, plus its not ATC's responsibility to deviate aircraft for weather. Lots of ATC facilities don't even have weather. Who knows what kind of equipment they have in Buenos Aires.

Looks like a pretty big system, though, requiring a long detour, and nobody wants that. I suppose they just decided to plow their way through it. The planes on-board weather radar would have helped, but finding a path through is often more art and luck than science.

All's well that ends well, though.

The engines were probably fine aside from some paint removal. I found a GE Hail test that is pretty uneventful although the amount that they throw at the engine is kinda amazing.

Water testing looks more spectacular.
